Can a loving partner help you have self-love?

A few people have recently asked:


Q: "Is self-love really something you need to do all on your own? Or is it possible that someone else's love can help you love yourself?"


Here's my answer:


Absolutely!


Someone else's healthy love can show you all the lovable, amazing qualities that you didn't even know were worth loving.


Their love can unlock a deeper appreciation and respect for yourself that soothes insecurities put upon you from the past.


Because you are seeing yourself through their adoring eyes and experiencing what it's like to be treated lovingly by them, you now understand how you want to think, feel, and treat yourself from here on out.


However....


The "tricky" part is when we think they're teaching us to love ourselves...when really, we're just able to believe our own self-loving thoughts & feelings only when THEY are creating the right atmosphere by saying and doing all the right things.


The whole proof of self-love is in the SELF: When their love helps you create a new mindset towards yourself such that you shift your identity into that of someone with self-love...then it becomes real and lasting.


So yes, even though they are helping you realize yourself in a new way... you are ultimately the one who must change your own mindset, vision, and integrate a new way of BEING.


They can totally help you learn how to drive -- but you can't rely on them to always be there in the passenger seat directing you.


You have to be willing to build your identity as someone who is a driver... whether or not there's someone else in the car.


(Sure you may prefer to not drive alone, but when you must, it won't stop you from taking yourself where you want to go. And you won't be resentful towards your partner for "preventing" you from being able to do so!)
